Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU)

Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit enables us to give critically ill children, or children requiring close observation, the specialized care they require. A team of highly skilled doctors, called pediatric intensivists, supervises the care of PICU patients. They understand the importance of keeping families informed and make it a priority to communicate about each child's progress and treatment. They also continually update your pediatrician on your child's care.

If your child needs a consultation with another specialist, such as a cardiologist, the pediatric team will arrange the consultation and coordinate care. When needed, we can offer the services of Pediatric Critical Care Transport.

In addition to our pediatric intensivists, our PICU team includes: pediatricians, critical care nurses, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists, registered dieticians, pharmacists and case managers/social workers. If your child needs a consultation with another specialist, such as a cardiologist, the PICU team will arrange the consultation and coordinate care.

When needed, we can offer the services of Pediatric Critical Care Transport to Chippenham Hospital if you’re at a facility that can’t care for your child at the level of care necessary.

Family-Focused Care

Everything in our pediatric units has been designed around the comfort of our patients and their families. Parents may visit their child 24/7 and if needed, a place will be provided for parents with blankets and pillows. Family visitation is strongly encouraged so that your child can feel at ease and focus on recovery. However, visitation by others is limited to three at a time. Your nurse will review visiting hours and guidelines when you arrive on the unit. Our first priority is always a safe and quick recovery for your child.
